Hillary Clinton’s waffling on the issue of drivers licenses for illegals in the Democratic presidential debate at Drexell University Tuesday was quite revealing. Her her lack of preparation? Nope. Her over-riding sense of entitlement and arrogance? Bingo!
Quite simply, Ms. Clinton considers it a personal assault–on her “space,” her gender, and her status as a former First Lady–to be asked a tough question.
And why shouldn’t she? From the beginning of her political career to the present, the mainstream media has been remarkably consistent in their refusal to examine her numerous “shortcomings.” Any in-depth look at Travelgate, the Whitewater billing records, the numerous campaign finance “irregularities,” her healthcare fiasco, all-over-the-map positions on Iraq, and Iran along with her latest waffle on licenses for illegals has been successfully blunted using one of two primary strategies: she’s either the “victim of a vast right wing conspiracy,” or a “defenseless woman” being preyed upon by a misogynistic, male-dominated media.
Her campaign staff’s reaction to the Senator’s non-answer on illegals? “Unfairly targeted” by Tim Russert. Criticism from her fellow, all-male, Democratic candidates? A “withering assault.” A damage-control video released on Wednesday? “The Politics of Pile On” with clips of her rivals “going after” her.
It well be interesting to see if what happened Tuesday night was an anomaly–or the beginning of the Senator’s “de-immunization” from serious scrutiny. The bet here is most of the MSM is in the tank, just as they’ve always been. But even for these Democratic lapdogs, the scent of blood on the water may prove irresistible. And it’s not as if Edwards or Obama have positions so different from Hillary Clinton that toppling her from the top spot would radically alter the Democratic Party’s campaign message.
In the movie “All About Eve” Betty Davis, contemplating her confrontation with a duplicitous and conniving Ann Baxter, said, “Fasten your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
Buckle up, Ms. Clinton.
