Even some Muslim women in France are speaking out against being forced to wear the Islamic body-and-face enveloping burqas and niqabs, according to a recent Associated Press story, and that’s great, though it may be a case of too little too late.
In its efforts to assimilate its frequently angry, violent and growing Muslim population, France empanelled a committee to look into, among other things, this type of costume requirement, the story notes.
The panel was announced in June; a day after President Nicolas Sarkozy said publically that he thought the robes make “prisoners” out of women and will never be welcome in France.
Naturally, there are concerns of a backlash like that experienced in 2004, when France banned the wearing of Muslim head scarves in public schools.
That time, the French engaged in a bit of ridiculous political correctness by including bans on Jewish yarmulkes and big Christian crosses, in an attempt, I suppose, at even-handedness.
But the difference between these items is huge and obvious.
The bans the French are attempting to impose are not about trying to deny people the right to be Muslim, which is why banning skullcaps and crucifixes is ridiculous. Those other things are symbols of a religious faith, but these full-body veils are another matter altogether.
Those tents are capable of hiding a myriad of evils, including the wearer’s identity, even its gender, not to mention what he or she might be carrying under there or evidence of abuse against the woman concealed therein.
One witness, an outspoken advocate for the rights of Muslim women in France, reportedly said,
“The survival of many young women depends on” new laws to protect them. “They get around with their ghetto on their backs,” according to the story.
The story notes that the woman said such full-body veils contribute to “the separation of populations.”
There are some 5 million Muslims in France, Western Europe’s largest such population, and a growing number of women there are wearing these full-body veils, according to the story.
France is fighting for its secular life, but it may be too late. They allowed the invaders in, and they’re taking over.
France finds itself battling the outward signs of the Islamic conquest of the country, but I’m not sure how much that really means.
What language are the signs in? How safe are non-Muslims in the streets? What flags fly in the windows? Are shops still open on Friday nights or is the country forced to shut down in honor of the Muslim Sabbath? These are the kinds of things by which once can judge the degree to which a country has been taken over.
Come to think of it, by that measure, there are parts of the United States that may be in some trouble.
